  • Lute Recital – Hideki Yamaya Performing Renaissance Music February 14th

    Hideki Yamaya, an acclaimed lutenist from New Haven, CT will present a solo recital on 10-course Renaissance lute from 7:30pm to 8:30pm on Wednesday 14th February at OSU.

    The program will include selections from early 17th-century England, France, and Italy. Composers represented will include John Dowland, Robert Ballard, Johann Kapsberger, and Alessandro Piccinini.

    Mr. Yamaya will also present a lute song concert with OSU vocal faculty Amy Hansen, soprano and Nicholas Larson, tenor, on the evening of Thu. Feb. 15 at the same venue from 7:30pm to 9:00pm.

    CONCERT FEATURING FLAMENCO GUITAR DUO BERTO BOYD & GRANT RUIZ
    Berto Boyd and Grant Ruiz will perform original Flamenco music from their CD “Convivencia”. Their group Flamenco Pacifico has been a favorite among Oregon festivals such as Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Oregon Country Fair, Britt Fest and DaVinci days. Web: www.flamencopacifico.com

    CONCERT FEATURING CLASSICAL GUITARIST JON SHARP & SOPRANO REBECCA FROMHERZ
    This concert will feature music from South America including Heitor Villa-Lobos, one of Brazil’s greatest composers, along with Argentineans Jose Luis Merlin and others. We will also explore some of the modern compositions by American guitar maestro Andrew York and look back at early music from Europe that inspired the New World.

    Local Guitar/Ukulele Ensemble
    For those of you interested in maintaining your guitar ensemble activities while we take a break at the Guitar Society, you may wish to join Anne Loewen’s guitar/ukulele ensemble which meets on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month from 10-11am in the Allison room at the Presbyterian Church.     Oregon State University’s SAC Academy
    OFFERING GUITAR ENSEMBLE, GROUP GUITAR, AND PRIVATE LESSONS TO THE CORVALLIS GUITAR COMMUNITY BY GUITAR INSTRUCTOR CAMERON O’CONNOR
    Guitar Ensemble (Tue/Thurs 4-5pm) includes bi-weekly rehearsals of classical and contemporary music and a March concert.  Rehearsal and ensemble techniques— being present and aware of your conductor and neighbors, non-verbal communication, researching repertoire— will be stressed in an effort to produce the best possible performance at the end of the term.

    Guitar Festival  Weekend of June 8th and 9th
    Following the success of our first festival in 2017, we will be presenting Corvallis’ Second Annual Guitar Festival in June 2018. We are in the process of establishing the agenda for the festival, but we are delighted local maestro Cameron O’Connor is going to open the event for us with the Friday night concert. We are in the process of securing the Saturday Headline artist who, assuming all goes ahead, will be fabulous J

  • Ensemble Music for the Dec 4th Guitar Society Meeting & Corvallis Library Concert!

    Dear All
    Here is the music we will be playing during the open ensemble session at the upcoming Guitar Society meeting on December 4th. It is the music we will be performing as part of the CGS Winter Concert on December 16th at the Corvallis Library. Everyone is very welcome to participate as we are planning it to be a community concert. The more the merrier!

    Please download the scores, take a look at which parts you wish to play, and bring a copy with you and your guitar to the meeting on December 4th, 7pm at Odd Fellows Hall, 2nd St., Corvallis. The goal here is musical fun & participation – feel free to simplify your parts and just join in. This is the oder in which we will be playing the pieces:

  • Ensemble Music for October 2nd Meeting

    Below are the guitar ensemble music scores for the open ensemble session at the next Guitar Society meeting on October 2nd, 7-9pm at Odd Fellows Hall downtown Corvallis. We will be playing pieces that are candidates for the Guitar Society’s Concert on December 16th between 2pm and 5pm at Corvallis Library. The goal is to perform some festive ensemble pieces as part of the concert, so I encourage you all to please put the date in your calendar and plan on being part of the concert! More details will follow.

    So download the scores, decide which parts you wish to play, and bring them along with your guitar and music stand (if you have one) even if you do not wish to be part of the concert. It’s all about having fun and joining in so simplify your parts if you wish – no pressure!

    Dear Guitar Friends,
    It was great to see everyone after the summer break at the meeting on September 11th, and it was wonderful to have featured artist Ed Dunsavage charm us with his beautiful and articulate jazz arrangements.

    Corvallis Art Walk and Guitar Society Join Forces
    The Guitar Society is joining together with the Corvallis Arts Walk (CAW) to provide musicians in support of next month’s CAW on Thursday October 19th. This is in recognition of the 3rd anniversary of the CAW. If you are interested in being part of this celebration, let me know.

    OSU Guitar Program
    I am very pleased to announce that OSU School of Arts and Communication has established a guitar program with Cameron O’Conner as the new guitar instructor. Cameron is a true maestro of classical guitar with a diverse career in solo, chamber, and contemporary music as well as a prizewinner in 10 international competitions. He is strong believer in the importance of the accessibility of arts for the public and we look forward to working with him to continue growing the classical and related guitar scene here in the greater Willamette Valley area.     Next Guitar Society Meeting Monday October 2nd
    We will continue this season’s first Monday sessions with our Guitar Society Meeting October 2nd.

    We will be playing ensemble music including looking at what we plan to play at the December 16th Concert at the Corvallis Library. There will be an open stage session as usual for people to get up and share their music with us – all acoustic guitar styles are welcome.

    I am delighted to announce that our featured artist for September will be Scott Kritzer from Portland.
    Scott is a nationally renowned performer and pedagogue in the world of classical guitar with a wonderful blend of technical excellence and musicality. After his debut at Carnegie Hall, the New York Times reviewed Scott Kritzer as:
    …intelligent and self-assured…with a sure technique and a musical sensitivity, he created an inner life in his playing, a thinking and caring musician.
